Objective: To study the effectiveness of intraoperative mitomycin C in pterygium excision and the postoperative complications.
Study design: Non-randomized clinical trial.
Subjects: Ninety primary pterygia were studied from January 1998 to September 1999 at the Department of Ophthalmology, BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital.
Methods: Ninety primary pterygia were non-randomized to two groups : simple excision (40 pterygia). and
intraoperative mitomycin 0.4 mg/ml for 3 minutes (50 pterygia). Study the effectiveness and complications of these two techniques.
Main outcome measures: Recurrence of pterygium and postoperative complications were measured.
Results: The recurrence rates in simple excision and intraoperative mitomycin were
78.7 %, and 6.1 %. respectivey with statistically significant difference (p = 0.01). There was no serious complication in both two groups.
Conclusion: Intraoperative mitomycin C was a effective adjunct to surgical excision in the treatment of primary pterygium.
