Objective: Firstly to find out whether the nurses' Buddhist Characteristics, psychological characteristics and the performance behavior had any positive relationship with one another and secondly to see whether different background variables (i.e., number of working year, nature of work that matched the subject's character, marital status, monthly income, number of family members and additional training) led to the difference in the Buddhist characteristics, the psychological characteristics and the performance behavior,

Study design: Survey research.

Subjects: The sample consisted of 436 professional nurses in the general practice section, the surgery section, the obstetrics and gynecology section and the pediatrics section at BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital, Central Hospital, Taksin Hospital, and Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital.

Methods: The questionnaires were composed of Buddhist characteristics, psychological characteristics and performance behavior(r = 0.79, 0.89 and 0.84, respectively).  Percentage, mean, three-way variation multiple regression and one-way analysis of variance were used for the whole samples and subgroups.

Main outcome measures: The Buddist characteristics, the psychological characteristics and the performance behavior

Results: Three findings were stated below.  Fist, it was found that difference in the nature of work that matched the character led to a significant difference in the Buddhist characteristics, psychological characteristics and the performance behavior at the 0.001 level.  Also, difference in marital status contributed to a significant difference in their performance behavior at the 0.05 level.  Next, the deference in monthly income led to the difference in their psychological characteristics at the 0.05 level.  However, no significant deference was found when the number of working work, number of family members and additional training were considered. That was these factors had no impact on their Buddhist characteristics psychological characteristics, and performance behavior.

Second, the nurses' Buddhist characteristics and psychological characteristics were found to have a positive relationship with their performance behavior at the 0.05 level (r = 0.50, 0.38, and 0.31 respectively).

Third, when the multiple regressions was used to find out which set of variables could accurately predict their performance behavior, it was found that the Buddhist characteristics could predicted the performance behavior with 25 percent correct. When the psychological characteristics were considered, the performance behavior could be predicted with additional 26.5% correct.

Conclusion: The nurses' Buddhist characteristics and psychological characteristics were found to have a positive relationship with their performance behavior at the 0.05 level.  The Professional nurses should be given more opportunity to join the activities that provide that with Buddhist knowledge, such as a training course on ethics offered at various monasteries of sanctuaries for students, government officials and the general public and the nurses should be administered a test on their ethics and attitude toward this career.  This was a method to select student nurses and to develop this vocation

Key words: Buddhist characteristics, psychological characteristics, performance behavior, nurse
