Students’ Alcohol Consumption Behavior in Phrakhanong Area, Bangkok

Abstract
Objective: To explores students’ alcohol consumption behavior and evaluates the effect of different family and socialfactors on alcohol consumption.
Methods: This is a quantitative research. Investigator randomly selected 100 Mathayom 3-6 students with alcoholconsumption behavior from 4 different schools in Phrakhanong area. Students completed surveys regarding thefamily and social factors.
Results: Family and social factors increased the likelihood of students’ alcohol consumption behavior. Drinking behavior of family members influenced students. Father’s drinking behavior was account in 70% and relativesin 69%. Most drinking was done in social group aims for socialization in 75%, for covering inferiority complexin 74%, and for occasional events in 70%. Student’s alcohol consumption behavior was mostly provoked byfriends and relatives. Ninety percent of students perceived that drinking was harmful.
Conclusions: Family and social factors had a role in students’ alcohol consumption behavior. Most studentsperceived the harmful consequences of alcohol, but used it for socialization and suppression of grief.
