A score is the raw performance data obtained from a test. A grade is the level of performance this represents. Letter grades (e.g., A = excellent, B = good, C = fair, D = poor, and F = fail) are typically assigned by comparing a student's performance to a pre-specified standard of performance (criterion-related grading) or to the performance of the members of a group (norm-related grading). If a variety of assessments are employed it is recommended that scores from all kinds of assessment should be converted to a common grade scale before aggregation.
