Abstract

Evaluation of Knowledge, Attitude and Skill of Medical Graduates and Their Perception on BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital

Objective: To evaluate knowledge, attitude and skill of medical graduates and their perception on BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital.

Study design: Cross-sectional descriptive study.

Subjects: 1. One hundred and thirty-nine colleagues at actual wording place.

2. Thirty-five medical graduates from BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital year 1999-2002.

Methods: Set up a project for evaluation of medical graduates in the year 2000 and 2001 in annual activity plan of the college.  The present addresses and actual working places of the medical graduates were verified. Volunteer were allocated to visits provincial and community hospitals, which the medical graduates were actually working.  Medical graduates and their colleagues.  were interviewed by visiting faculty members using structured questions and self-report questionnaires.  The result of knowledge, skill and attitude of medical graduates were assessed by the colleagues.  The medical graduates' perception on the departments and the college according to Likert scale 1-5 was assessed by statistical usage of mean and standard evaluation.

Main outcome measures: Mean and standard deviation value from results of knowledge, skill and attitude evaluation of medical graduates and the perception of medical graduates on the department and the college.

Results: Thirty-five medical graduates and 139 colleagues participated in interviewing and response to the questionnaires.  Mean of essential medical knowledge was 3.8+0.61, mean of disease prevention tea 3.7+0.52, mean of health promotion was 3.6+0.61, mean of rehabilitation knowledge was 3.4+0.61, mean of clinical decision making was 3.3+0.67, mean of manual skill was 3.6+0.67, mean of appropriate laboratory investigation was 3.6+0.71, mean of interpersonal relationship was 4.1+0.79, mean of doctor patient relationship was3.9+0.73, mean of medical ethic was 4.0+0.72, and mean of management efficiency was 2.8+0.4.  The perception about the college in welfare aspect was 2.8+1.2. It had been demonstrated that medical graduates obtained the most knowledge benefit from Department of Emergency Medicine and Forensic Medicine, 77.0% of average, while the others obtained 54.0-71.5%.

Conclusion: The medical graduates and their colleagues satisfied in medical knowledge clinical decision-making and manual skill.  Medical graduates had a good interpersonal, doctor-patient relationship and ethically medical practice, but they had insufficient managerial skill.  The educational support system from college was inadequate.  The medical graduates obtained the most knowledge benefit from Department of Emergency Medicine and Forensic Medicine.
