Abstract

Knowledge, Confidence and Opportunity to Practice for Antenatal Care Nursing of the Students at Kuakarun College of Nursing

Objective: To study and compare the knowledge about antenatal care nursing before and after being practiced at antenatal care clinic, the frequency of practicing with confidence and opportunities for antenatal care practice of nurse students at Kuakarun College of Nursing

Study design: Survey research.

Subjects: The samples were 155 third - year nurse students who has been studied at Kuakarun College of nursing and being practiced at antenatal care clinic in the year 2001, from Bangkok Metropilitan Hospital, i.e. BMA Medical College and  Vajira Hospital, Taksin Hspital, BMA General Hospital and Rajpipath Hospital.  The samples were purposively selected.

Methods: The questionnaires were answered by nurse students which consisted of knowledge about antenatal care nursing, the frequency of practicing with confidence and opportunities for antenatal care practice nursing.  The knowledge about antenatal care nursing were collected two times, one day before and after being practiced and the frequency of practicing with confidence and opportunities for antenatal care practice nursing were collected after being practiced.  Data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, medium, percentage and pair t-test

Main outcome measures: Knowledge, frequency of practicing with confidence and opportunities for antenatal care practice of nurse students.

Results: The student knowledge of antenatal care after being practice was at high level and better than before being practice with significantly at p-value 0.01 both as a whole and by item.  The students had more confidence after practicing 3 times on history taking, 4 times on pregnancy assessment, 3 times vaccination of tetanus toxoid, 4 times on advising of antenatal care, 3 times on pregnancy discomfort; 2 times on complication or high risk pregnancy frequently.  The students had opportunity for practicing history taking pregnancy assessment, tetanus vaccination at higher level than requirement.  Practice of antenatal care advising was at the highest confidence.  The opportunity to practice on advising of pregnancy discomfort was at medium level, complication or high risk pregnancy frequently was at low level

Conclusion: Most of the students had been practicing more than optimum criteria.  The nurse students confidence to practice were at least 3 times on history taking, 4 times on pregnancy assessment, 3 times on tetanus vaccination, 4 times advising on antenatal care, 3 times on pregnancy discomfort, 2 times on complication or high risk pregnancy frequently
