Objective: The main objective was to compare the effect of the added activities: the supportive group, the giving psychiatric nursing knowledge group and the non-added activities group the anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice (state anxiety).  The second objective was to study the correlation between trait anxiety and anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice (state anxiety); and the correlation between anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice (state anxiety) and grade of psychiatric nursing practice.

Study design: Randomized control group pretest-posttest design.

Subjects: The fifty-four students were third year of academic nursing programme, the second semester in the academic year 2000, who had score of anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice about the appointed criterion.

Methods: The methods consisted of two parts.  In the first, baseline data were the questionnaires of anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice, and trait anxiety.  Score of anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice were spited into three groups with randomized block design.  Each group had the high-middle-low score of anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice.  Those groups were the supportive group (18), the giving psychiatric nursing knowledge group (18), and control group (18). Secondly, giving two treatments were on day 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and in psychiatric nursing practice (six times), a week on two times, and one hour on time. A week later, the anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice data and grade of psychiatric nursing practice were collected.  The obtained data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, F-test (one-way ANOVA), Tukey's test the Pearson's correlation

Main outcome measures: Mean scores of anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice, mean scores of trait anxiety, and the grade of psychiatric nursing practice.

Results: Two important finding were: (1) The supportive group, which was the best for reducing anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice (state anxiety), was  significantly differentiated from the giving psychiatric nursing knowledge group and the control group at the p 0.001 level. (2) The anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice (state anxiety) and trait anxiety were significantly positive correlation at the p = 0.01 level.  The correlation between the anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice (state anxiety) and the grade of psychiatric nursing practice was negative at the p = 0.01 level

Conclusion: The supportive group, a good alternative method, would be added activity group in psychiatric nursing practice.  Besides it could reduce the anxiety in psychiatric nursing practice, then it was saving, easy, and nursing tools.
