A Study of Inquiry Behavior and Self-confidence of Nursing Students in Problem-based Learning Method at Kaukarun College of Nursing

Objective: To study the inquiry behavior and the self-confidence comparing before and learning in problem-based learning method in the first year of nurse students at Kaukarun College of Nursing.
Study design: Quasi-experimental research, one group pre-post test design.
Subjects: The 147-first year-nurse students, in Kaukarun College of Nursing, who studied the general psychology in problem-based learning method in academic year 2000, the first semester from 19 June 2000 to 3 July 2000
Methods: Pre-test of inquiry behavior and self-confidence scores were collected. Starting the process of problem-based learning method on topic of heredity and environment, individual differences in general psychology on 3 times. The first, preparing stage, nurse students were introduced in problem-based learning method by clarified terms, defined the problem from scenario, analyzed the problems, formulated hypothesis and learning objectives. The second, finding stage, nurse students collected additional information outside the group. And the third, presenting stage, nurse students presented and concluded principles derived from studying the problem. After 1 week, the post-test scores of inquiry behavior and self-confidence were collected again. The obtained data were analyzed by SPSS for Window programe.
Main outcome measures: Statistical mean and paired t-test of inquiry behavior and self-confidence.
Results: Nurse students, who learned in problem-based learning method, had the inquiry behavior scores after-learning better than before-learning significantly at the p-value 0.05 level, and had the self-confidence scores after-learning better than before-leaning significantly at the p-value 0.05 level
Conclusion: Problem-based learning method, a good alternative method of learning , could induce to be high inquiry behavior and self-confidence.
