Objective: The purposes of this research were to study the ability in clinical performance of nursing students at labour room, to determine the relationships between perception of nursing students toward clinical environment and ability in clinical performance of nursing students and to search for the variables that would be able to predict ability in clinical performance of nursing students at labour room.
Study design: Descriptive research.
Setting: Kuakarun College of Nursing.
Subjects: The 164 fourth year - nursing students through practicing skill in labour room of the nursing program studied in the academic year 2002 at Kuakarun College of Nursing.
Methods: Data were collected by questionnaires which comprised of 2 parts: part 1 was perception of nursing students toward clinical environment and part 2 was ability in clinical performance of nursing students at labour room. The data were collected by researcher who received 95.35% of the questionnaires back. The statistical techniques utilized in data analysis were mean, standard deviation, Pearson's product moment correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Main outcome measures: Mean and standard deviation lf scores of ability in clinical performance at labour room, Person's product moment correlation coefficient and Stepwise Multiple Regression analysis.
Results: Mean scores of ability in clinical performance at labour room in total were at the high level ( x = 3.93, SD = 0.36). Perception of nursing students toward clinical environment in the aspects of clinical teaching, environment in labour room, nursing instructors, staff nurses and nursing students were statistically significant and positively related to ability in clinical performance of nursing students at labour room, at the 0.01 level (r = 0.407, 0.432, 0.441, 0.476 and 0.526 respectively). Perception toward nursing students (S) , staff nurses (N) and environment in labour room (E) were factors that significantly predicted the ability in clinical performance of nursing students at labour room at the 0.01 level. These predictors accounted for 38.30% ( R2= 0.383) of the variance.
The predictor equation in raw score from the analysis was as follow:
Y = 1.208 + 0.375 S + 0.147 N + 0.154 E
The predictor equation in standard score from the analysis was as follow:
Z = 0.373 ZS + 0.213 ZN + 0.197 ZE
Conclusion: Most of nursing students had ability in clinical performance at labour room at high level. There were statistically significant positive relationships between perception of nursing students toward clinical environment and ability in clinical performance of nursing students at labour room (p < 0.01). Factors that could significantly predict the ability in clinical performance of nursing students at labour room were perception toward nursing students, staff nurses and environment in labour room (p
