Abstract

Gout is a common inflammatory arthritis in men and older women that has increased in prevalence in recent decades. It is a crystal deposition disease by formation of monosodium urate crystals in joints and other tissues. Hyperuricemia is associated with increased risk of hypertension and heart disease. Gout is often associated with cardiovascular problems, including high blood pressure and coronary artery disease, which can result in heart disease or congestive heart failure. Clinicians should be aware of the presence of common risk factors (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, smoking, etc.) in patients with hyperuricemia or gout in order to reduce the risk and severity of cardiovascular disease.
