Need and reason of 6th Year Medical Students’ Selection of Residency Program

Abstract

Objectives: To study the 6th year medical students’ selection of residency program and their reasons.


Study design: Survey study


Subjects: 6th year medical students


Methods: This survey was conducted in 6th year medical students during year 2016. The online self- administered questionnaires have been sent to the participants via google forms. Main outcome measures: Reasons for selection of residency program


Results: There were 79 medical students during year 2016, 38 participants replied online questionnaires (48.1%). Of these 38 participants, 37 cases (97.4%) intended to continue studying in medical specialty. Internal medicine, anesthesia , and pediatric were the top three respectively ( 24.4%, 13.5 and 10.8) . The reasons of their preference were classified into 3 parts; (1) Individualized characteristics ; the main reasons were personal interest and their own characteristics (97.9% and 81.6%) (2) Individualized reason during pre clinic and clinic training; the main reasons were personal interest and impression in their teachers during both training (74.1% and 85.3% ),( 51.9%and 70.6%) and (3) General; security and flexibility of the job (58.8% and 41.2%).


Conclusions: Most of 6th year medical students who responded in this study intended to continue studying in medical specialty. The number one ranking specialist field was internal medicine.
