Abstract

The Survey of Physical Therapeutic Techniques in Diabetes Mellitus Patients with Frozen Shoulder Syndrome in BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital

Objective: To survey and study the effectiveness of the physical therapeutic techniques in diabetes mellitus patients with frozen shoulder syndrome.

Study Design: Descriptive study

Subjects: 59 diabetes mellitus patients with frozen shoulder syndrome who receives the physical therapeutic treatment during 2001-2003 in BMA Medical College and  Vajira Hospital were enrolled.

Methods: Data from the physiotherapy forms was collected and analyzed.

Main outcome measures: Frequency of each physical therapeutic technique use in diabetes mellitus patients with frozen shoulder syndrome, number of patients who are successfully cured, and the average length of treatment for each technique.

Results: The diabetes mellitus patients with frozen shoulder syndrome who received 10 different physical therapeutic techniques that were the combination of two methods: 1) therapeutic exercises 2) mobilization method, and four devices: 1) shortwave diathermy 2) microwave diathermy 3) ultrasound and 4) hot pack. Each technique consisted lf at least one method and one or more devices. There are 34 successful patients or 57.63% using 13.97 times in average. There are 13 patients or 22.03% who fail in treatment using 8.15 times in averages. The success lf treatment lf the 12 remaining patients cannot be retrieves because the patients missed appointments and/or lost contact. They received treatment in total of 1.5 times in average.

Conclusion: The most frequent used technique was the combination of therapeutic exercise and shortwave diathermy. However, the most effective technique could not conclude.
