Abstract

Maternal and Newborn Complications of Birth before Admission to Taksin Hospital, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration

Objective: To study maternal and newborn complications of birth before admission to Taksin Hospital.

Study design: Descriptive study.

Subjects: One hundred patients who were delivered before admission between January 2003 - December 2004.

Methods: Demographic data, maternal and newborn complications were collected from medical records and analyzed.

Main outcome measures: The number of patients, main complications of mothers and newborns delivered before admission to Taksin Hospital.

Results: One hundred patients who delivered before admission were collected between January 2003 - December 2004. The majority of patients had low education, poor or no antenatal care, multipara, short  time of labor, long distance from the hospital. The most common maternal complication was birth canal laceration (78%). Newborn complications were hypothermia, prematurity, omphalitis and sepsis (75%, 17%, 15% and 9% respectively).

Conclusion: The incidence of birth before admission was 0.8%. The most maternal complication was birth canal laceration. The complications of newborns were hypothermia, prematurity, omphalitis and sepsis.
