Abstract

Perinatal Mortality in Taksin Hospital, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration

Objectives: To determine perinatal mortality rate and cause of death.

Study design: Descriptive study.

Subjects: A total of 364 perinatal deaths from 38,737 total births during January 1999 to December 2004 in Taksin Hospital, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration were enrolled.

Methods: Hospital records and labor reports were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed.

Main outcome measures: Perinatal mortality rate and cause of death

Results: The perinatal mortality rate from 1999-2004 were 10.6, 9.7, 9.1, 9.6, 9.7, and 7.6 per 1,000 total births respectively. These reducing trends came from decreasing in early neonatal mortality rather than still birth. Concerning about the cause of death by using modified Wigglesworth classification, congenital malformation, macerate stillbirth, birth asphyxia, prematurity and other specific conditions were 25.0%, 20.3%, 17.0%, 16.5% and 15.1% respectively. After comparing the cause of death in each year, preventable causes of death especially birth asphyxia and prematurity were decreased gradually.

Conclusion: The perinatal mortality rates were decreased from 10.6 per 1,000 total berths in the year 1999 to 7.6 per 1,000 total births in the year 2004. Congenital malformation was the most common cause of death.
