Objective: To determine the incidence and risk factors of accidental removal of femoral venous catheter in pediatric patients.

Study design: Descriptive study.

Subjects: A total of 69 pediatric patients who underwent femoral venous catheterization at the Department of Pediatrics, BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital during August 2005 to July 2007 were recruited.

Methods: Data from medical records of the enrolled subjects were recorded and analyzed.

Main outcome measures: Incidence and risk factors of accidental removal of femoral venous catheter.

Results: Age of the patients ranged from 9 days to 2.8 years (median 2 months). Incidence of accidental removal of femoral venous catheter was 23.2%. Disruption of the securing stitches was the significant risk factor for an accidental removal of femoral venous catheter (odds ratio 34.2; 95% confidence interval: 6.6-177.5). Factors tended to be associated with this event but without statistical significance were: age less than 1 year, body weight less than 3 kg, and the duration of catheterization longer than 15 days.

Conclusion: The incidence of accidental removal of femoral venous catheter in pediatric patients was 23.2%. Disruption of the securing stitches was a significant risk factor associated with accidental catheter removal.
