Abstract

Trends of Drug and Medical Supply Expenditures in BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital

Objective: To study the trends of drug and medical supply expenditures in BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital during the fiscal year 2005-2007.

Study design: Descriptive study.

Samples: Data were collected from dispensary units in department of pharmacy, BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital in the fiscal year 2005-2007.

Methods: Data of medical prescriptions, medicinal items based on out-patient and in-patient settings in the fiscal year 2005-2007 from the computer-database of BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital were extracted and analyzed using consumer price index of year 2007 for drugs and medical supplies.

Main outcome measures: The overall expenditures of drugs and medical supplies, the expenditures per prescription, per item and per admission during fiscal year 2005 and 2007 classified by out-patient and in-patient were studied.

Results: The overall adjusted payment for drugs and medical supplies in BMA Medical College and Vajira Hospital during fiscal year 2005 and 2007 were 766.3, 935.9 and 1,197.2 million Baht respectively. The prescriptions, items of drugs and medical supplies and their costs were increased each year. The expenditures of out-patient costs and in-patient costs increased 23.0% and 20.7% in the year 2006 as compared to 2005 and 39.2%, 9.5% in the year 2007 as compared to 2006.

Conclusion: Medical costs tended to increase during the fiscal year 2005 and 2007.
