Abstract

Rising of cathecholamine level is one of the factors causing pheochromocytoma patients at

risk of hypertensive crisis, hyperglycemia, myocardial ischemia, stroke and acute renal failure.

Though surgical adrenalectomy can completely cure the disease with success rate up to 90%,

process that occurs in perioperative period, such as medication used, intubation, surgical incision,

adrenalectomy and acute blood loss, can cause fluctuation of plasma catecholamine level with

negative consequences; for example, unstable vital signs and blood sugar level which can lead to

more serious complications. Therefore, medicine selection, preoperative preparation, along with

appropriate caution and proper complication management plan are important.

Objective of this review article is to summarize the information about perioperative

management for pheochromocytoma patient, including preoperative evaluation and preparation,

precautions, appropriate medicine selection, intraoperative monitoring, complication remedies and

postoperative cares.
