Correlation between OSCE Scores and Student’s Confidence in Level-1 Procedural Skills among The Sixth-Year Medical Students at Yala Hospital

Abstract

According to The Medical Council of Thailand’s level-1 procedural skills; expected the medical graduates perform without supervision. However, nowsadays medical graduates have reduced the procedure because of uncertainty. This study has an object to identify the level of the sixth-year medical student’s confidence for level-1 procedural skills and verify the correlation to OSCE scores at Yala hospital. A descriptive study, self-answered questionnaire regarding specific clinical procedures was undertaken to twenty-eight the sixth-year medical students at Yala hospital during April, 2018. The confidence is based on a 3-point Likert scale. The OSCE scores are categorized to 3 levels. The comparison of OSCE scores for each procedure and each student was performed using Pearson’s correlation with P<0.05 is statistical significant.  There were 28 the sixth-year medical students answered 21 procedures, the highest mean OSCE score procedure is Pap smear (89.66±10.18) while the lowest is Excision of benign tumor and cyst of skin & subcutaneous tissue (48.00±10.30). The mean score of confidence for each procedural skills range from 1.64 (Postural drainage) to 2.79 (wound dressing). The external splinting, normal labour and PAP smear are only 3 procedures correlating between OSCE scores and student’s confidence in level-1 procedural skill among the sixth-year medical students. Overall, the OSCE scores were not correlated with the level of confidence of the sixth-year medical students in performing the level-1 procedural skills. The confidence of the medical students in the procedure was dependent on several factors such as the number of training sessions practice, personal confidence, difficulty of the test. There should be further studies of the causes of low confidence in some procedures. To be the next solution.
