The Effects of Program Strengthening Caregiving Ability for Community Health Workers of Chronic Diseases Older Adults with Dependence

Abstract

Older adults and chronic diseases have increased incidence. Community health worker is key person for caring older adults in primary care unit. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of program strengthening ability for community health workers of chronic diseases older adults with dependence on caregiving ability and positive aspects of caregiving among community health workers. Twenty-two as purposive sampling, were participants who lived in Khao pra ngam community, Lupburi Province. The program was two periods that the first period, activities of two weeks consist of providing knowledge, practicing care skills, and next four weeks was caregiving practices in dependent older adults. The second period, activities of two days consist of sharing experiences and enhancing positive aspects of caregiving. Data were collected using the Caregiving ability and the Positive Aspects of Caregiving Questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, and Wilcoxon singed-rank test.

Results showed that 1) community health worker had increased caregiving ability significantly after program implementation. 2) Community health worker increased positive aspects of caregiving significantly after program implementation. Results of this study suggest that community health workers could work together with health care team and should encourage positive attitudes and caregiving ability sustainable.
