The development of the solid waste management model with participation Pasak community, Sri toy sub-district, Mae Jai district, Phayao province.

Abstract

This action research aimed to develop a community-based participatory solid waste management model in Pasak, Sri Thoi Subdistrict, Mae Chai District, Phayao Province. The study was divided into 2 phases: 1) Pre-research phase by studying concepts and theories related to solid waste management, surveying and analyzing solid waste management problems in terms of knowledge, behavior, and participation from 90 household representatives to provide data for analyzing the community situation, and 2) Research implementation phase according to Kemmis & McTaggart cycle. The target groups were householders or representatives of households, village committees, communities, and officers responsible for environmental management. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Paired sample t-test. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The results of the study found that people had low to moderate levels of knowledge, behavior, and participation. Therefore, a problem solving plan was developed which consisted of participation in 3 main activities: 1) Creative Pasak, Knowing and Participating in Waste Management 2) Organic Waste Miracle and 3) Pasak Sorting. After the implementation, the knowledge level increased from a mean of 8.87 (SD = 1.89) to 12.45 (SD = 1.67), waste separation behavior increased from a mean of 34.04 (SD = 5.65) to 42.76 (SD = 4.92) and the participation level increased from a mean of 15.92 (SD = 4.87) to 20.77 (SD = 3.90), which were statistically significant (p < 0.01). In conclusion, the developed community participatory waste management model of Pasak resulted in people having better knowledge and behavior, as well as promoting environmental sustainability and effective waste management in the community.
