Factors Associated with the Behavior of Reducing and Separating Solid Waste in People's Household Waste in That Subdistrict, Wanon Niwat District, Sakon Nakhon Province

This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to examine the level of behavior and the factors associated with household waste reduction and separation behaviors among residents in That Subdistrict, Wanon Niwat District, Sakon Nakhon Province. The sample consisted of 343 household representatives responsible for waste separation, selected using multi-stage sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage, chi-square test, and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.
The results showed that the majority of the respondents (70.26%) demonstrated a good level of household waste reduction and separation behaviors. Statistically significant factors associated with such behaviors included gender (p-value = 0.005) and education level (p-value = 0.043). Positive correlations were found with monthly income (rs=0.130), knowledge (rs=0.227), attitude (rs=0.381), conformity to reference groups (rs=0.211), perceived behavioral control (rs=0.344), and behavioral intention (rs= 0.687). Conversely, a negative correlation was found with the number of household members (rs=-0.199).
These findings are consistent with the Theory of Planned Behavior, which highlights behavioral intention as a key predictor of household waste reduction and separation. Therefore, relevant agencies should implement continuous programs or measures that promote waste separation at the household level, emphasizing incentives and awareness building, such as model households for waste separation. Local administrative organizations should also develop supportive infrastructure, such as providing adequate categorized waste bins.
