Abstract

This single-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effects of balance training using a balance board on walking ability, balance performance, and fear of falling in patients with hip fractures receiving care at Khetum Ban Hospital, Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand. The sample consisted of 13 female who aged between 64-90 years. Participants underwent the Otago exercise program on a balance board, conducted 3 times per week for 40–45 minutes per session over a 4-week period. Outcome measures included the 10-Meter Walk Test (10MWT), the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), and fear of falling assessment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests, with a significance level set at 0.05.

The results indicated that after completing the 4-week Otago exercise program on the balance board, participants showed statistically significant improvements in walking ability (mean duration ± SD = 27.93 ± 11.71), balance performance (mean duration ± SD = 26.48 ± 10.80), and fear of falling (mean score ± SD = 20.77 ± 2.05), as evidenced by reductions in 10MWT time, TUG time, and fear of falling scores (p<0.001). These findings suggested that the Otago exercise program on a balance board effectively enhances walking and balance performance while reducing fear of falling in patients with hip fractures. Nurses or other relevant healthcare professionals could apply this program to patients with hip fractures to promote self-care during the postoperative rehabilitation period.
