Abstract

The geriatric population experiences significant changes of several organ systems. They also have several co-morbidities and are considerably vulnerable and especially sensitive to the stress of surgery and anesthesia. A high incidence of postprocedural complications in this population is observed. Appropriate perioperative care was required for geriatric patients. Generally, intravenous sedation has been utilized for geriatric patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy (GIE). However, sedation-related complications in these patients are relatively high. All geriatric patients undergoing GIE procedures require a preprocedural evaluation and preparation, as well as appropriate monitoring during and after the procedure.
