Abstract

Background: In Ratchaburi hospital, patients had been visited preoperatively by nurse anesthetists to educate about anesthesia. In 2011, about 89.58% parturients awaiting elective cesarean section were not visited which affected their cooperation in anesthesia process.

Objectives: To compare average score of knowledge and behavior of the first parturients who received intrathecal morphine for cesarean section between those with systematic preparing program and those with routine preparation

Methods: Term primigravidarum aged more than 18 years undergoing elective cesarean section using intrathecal morphine from December 2011 to March 2012 were randomly allocated into 2 groups; Experimental group (E) and Control group (C). Each group had 25 patients. Tools were personal data form, practice knowledge test, behavior test (before - during - after anesthesia), preoperative anesthetic visit using audiovisual and information sheet about intrathecal morphine for cesarean section.

Results: Average score of knowledge of posttest in the E group was higher than that of the C group significantly (p < 0.05). Comparison between the E and the C group regarding the posttest, the E group showed higher average score of knowledge than the C group significantly (p < 0.05). About behavior test, the E group had higher posttest score than the C group significantly (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: The first parturients who received standard preparing program had more knowledge and higher score on behavior test for anesthesia using intrathecal morphine for cesarean section.
