The patient’s satisfaction with preanesthetic preparation for cardiovascular surgery

Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular surgery is a major and high risk procedure. Patients usually have a fear and anxiety. Nurse anesthetists have a role in the care and preparation patients in both physical and mind. The purpose of this study is to examine the patient’s satisfaction with preanesthetic preparation for cardiovascular surgery at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. Method: A descriptive study in 55 patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery from May to June 2011. The sample selected by using purposive sampling. The research instruments composed of demographic data form and patient’s satisfaction regarding preparation for general anesthesia questionnaire, written by Pikul Nuntachaipun. The content validity of the questionnaire was assessed by experts, the reliability was obtained by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and it was 0.91. Data were analyzed by using the descriptive statistics including frequency, percent and level of satisfaction. Results: This study revealed that patient were highly satisfied nursing care that they received (98.2%) and mean score was 174.51. Three of satisfaction that the majorityof the patient reported unsatisfaction part were low level of unsatisfaction (90.9%). A high level (96.4%) of interpersonal support part and a high level (98.2%) of good impression part were demonstrated. Conclusion: The level of patient’s satisfaction with nursing care represents the degree of congruence between the expected quality of nursing care and the actual received care. Patient’s satisfaction has become an important goal of any health care organization and an outcome measure of care. The results of this study can be used as indicators of nursing quality assurance for this study setting. The findings suggest the quality of nursing care needs to be enhanced in order to reach the patient’s satisfaction at the level of “highly satisfied” in all aspects.
