Factors Predicting Fear of Childbirth Among Pregnant Women

There are many factors which related to the fear of childbirth including both personal factors and social factors. This purpose of predictive correlational study was to explore the factors related to the fear of childbirth among pregnant women such as anxiety, self- esteem, social support and marital relationship. The 160 subjects attended the antenatal department in Phayao hospital from November 2015 to January 2016. The research tools were the Wijma Delivery Expectancy/ Experience Questionnaire [W- DEQ] Version A by Wijma et al., (1998), Thai version by Kotchakorn Tampawiboon (2005); The State - Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI] form Y by Spielberger (1983) Thai version by Tatree Nontasak, Sompoch Iamsupasit (Darawan Thapinta, 1995); The Self-Esteem Scale by Rosenberg (1965) Thai version by Jirawan Niramitpasa (2008); Social Support Questionnaire by Kritikaporn Yainontad (1999) modified by Jirawan Niramitpasa (2008); Dyadic Adjustment Scale [DAS] by Spanier (1976), Thai version by Wanpen Saimukka, Soiy Anusornteerakul & Supunnee Ungpansattawong, (2012). The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the W- DEQ version A, the STAI form Y, the Self-Esteem Scale, the Social Support Questionnaire and the DAS were .94, .95, .86, .87 and .98 respectively. A statistics and Stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze the data.
Results of the study revealed that:
- Regarding fear of childbirth, pregnant women had a mean score of 57.6 (S.D. = 24.36).
The pregnant women had moderate and high levels of childbirth fear 31.3% and 28.1% respectively. The primigravida woman had more fear of childbirth than the multigravida woman.
- 2. Anxiety can predict the fear of childbirth at 27% (p < .01). Anxiety and social support can predict fear of childbirth at 28% (p < .01).
These findings recommend to study guideline to evaluate the fears of childbirth among pregnant women with Influence factors such as anxiety and social support.
