Perception of Illness Among Caregivers of Children with Acute Illness and Related Factors

Acute illness in child is a stressful experience for caregivers. This correlational descriptive study aimed to study the relationship between children factors including age, diseases, hospitalization; caregivers factors including experiences of sick child care, nursing supports, and the perception of Illness among caregivers of children with acute Illness. The study sample, selected by purposive sampling, included 85 caregivers of children with acute illness, aged from 1 months to 5 years who hospitalized in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital from January to April 2017. The research instruments included The Illness Perception Questionnaire developed by Nelson et al. (2016), which was translated into Thai by the researchers, and
The Nurse Parent Support Tool developed by Miles, Carlson, & Brunssen (1999), which was translated into Thai by Kantahong, Niyomkar, & Lamchang (2014). The reliability of the instruments were .93, and .97 respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation and Spearman’s rank-order coefficient.
The study results revealed that:
- The overall perception of caregivers of children with acute illness had a moderate perception of illness threat (= 3.65 D. = 0.53). For each dimention of the perception of illness, identity, consequences-child, control-child, and emotional expression were at high level (= 4.07 S.D. = 0.69, = 3.76 S.D. = 0.81, = 4.15 S.D. = 0.59, and = 4.05 S.D. = 0.67 respectively), and consequences-caregiver, control- caregiver, timeline, and illness-coherence were at moderate level(= 3.49 S.D. = 0.84, = 3.47 S.D. = 0.74, = 2.89 S.D. = 0.84, and = 3.39 S.D. = 0.76 respectively).
- Child’s age showed statistically significant positive relationship to perception of illness regarding consequences-child at low level (r = 0.22, p < .05), frequency of child hospitalization showed statistically significant positive relationship to perception of illness regarding control-child at low level (r = 0.22, p < .05), and child’s disease showed statistically significant negaitive relationship to perception of illness regarding illness-coherence at low level (r = - 0.23, p < .05),
The results of this study indicate that caregivers of children with acute illness perceived threat of child’s illness from moderate to high level. Child factors including age, hospitalization, and disease had relationship to caregiver perception of illness. Therefor nurses should promote caregivers to understand about disease and child hospitalization in order to advice them appropriate perception of illness.
