Quality of Life Among Stroke Persons Within Six Months Post Diagnosis

Stroke is the abrupt onset decreasing cerebral blood flow due to rupture, thrombosis, or occlusion. Persons with stroke are affected to physically, psychologically, and socioeconomically resulting in a lower quality of life. This prospective and descriptive research design aimed to explore the quality of life among persons with stroke within the first sixth months of post diagnosis and to compare their quality of life between before hospital discharge and at one, three and six months post diagnosis. The participants were selected using purposive sampling, and consisted of thirty nine persons with stroke who were hospitalized at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. Research instruments consisted of a demographic data record form, and the Stroke Specific Quality of Life Scale (SSQOL), Thai version. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to test the internal consistency reliability of the instrument which gave a value of 0.97. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the comparison of the quality of life in the period before discharging from the hospital and at one, three and six months post diagnosis was made using the Friedman Test. The comparison of the quality of life between two periods post diagnosis used Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
The research findings revealed that
- 1. The overall quality of life before discharging from the hospital and at one, three and six months post diagnosis were at moderate level.
- 2. The overall quality of life at 4 periods, which were before discharging from the hospital and at one, three and six months post diagnosis, was statistically significantly different. In pair comparison of two periods of time post diagnosis, it was found that the quality of life before discharging and at one month, and three months post diagnosis were statistically significantly lower than at six months post diagnosis (p<.001).
The findings of this study demonstrated that the overall quality of life among stroke persons within six months was at moderate level. Further study should explore the factors predicting quality of life and an appropriate nursing intervention to improve the quality of care of these patients.
