Abstract

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a severe emerging infectious disease whose presence is increasing among healthcare workers. The purpose of this descriptive research was to study attitudes, subjective norms, behavioral control and intention to prevent MERS infection among registered nurses. The subjects were 416 registered nurses in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat province using multi-stage random sampling. The research instrument consisted of a questionnaire developed by the researcher and based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. The questionnaire passed the content validity and reliability test. Data were collected from March to April 2015 and analyzed by using descriptive statistics.

The results of this study are as follows:

1.The subjects had the highest level of attitude to prevent MERS Infection.

2.The subjects had the highest level of subjective norm to prevent MERS Infection.

3.The subjects had the high level of perceived behavioral control to prevent MERS Infection.

4.The subjects had the highest level of intention to prevent MERS Infection via hand hygiene, personal protective equipment use, patient placement, textiles management, solid waste management and by making suggestions to patients.

The results suggest that healthcare teams and other relevant authorities should use the findings of this study to develop a plan to prevent MERS Infection among registered nurses by encouraging motivation to comply with the referents of attendants and perceived behavioral control in order to support their intention to prevent MERS Infection.
