Abstract

Unintentional injuries in early childhood are a major public health issue in Thailand. Family members are important caregivers for young children. Therefore, it is important to know about the factors related to family member practices for early childhood injury prevention in community. The purposes of this descriptive correlational study was to study the correlation between factors related to family member practices for early childhood injury prevention in community. The subjects were 110 persons that were the main caregiver of a young child and who studied child care under the local administrative organization in Saraphi District, Chiang Mai Province. Data was collected through interviews. The research instruments consist of demographic data, knowledge, attitude, perceived benefits, cooperation and injury prevention practices among family member for early childhood injury prevention in community. The content validity of interviewing forms were .91, .89, .94, .94 and .98 respectively and reliabilities were .79, .91, .78, .81 and .86 respectively. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient and Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient were used to analyze data. The results of this research revealed that:

  1. Most of the family members have a high percentage score (86.40%) for early childhood injury prevention practices in community among family members.
  2. Most family members have a high score for knowledge, attitude, perceived benefits, cooperative with injury prevention practices for early childhood in community, (85.45%, 59.40%, 95.50% and 63.60%) respectively.
  3. Cooperation was found to be significantly and positively correlated with family member practices for early childhood injury prevention in community (r = .500, p < 0.01). Knowledge and attitude were found to be positively correlated (r =.129, p =.180, r =.073, p =.450), but perceived benefits were found to be negatively correlated (r =-.013, p =.894) with family member practices for early childhood injury prevention in community.

The findings of the study indicate that cooperation are associated with family member practices for early childhood injury prevention in community. Therefore health personnel should plan to improve the family member cooperation for effective injury prevention practices among early childhood.
