Abstract

Overweight school-aged children is a public health problem that has increased. It is caused by inappropriate food consumption and exercise behaviors. The purpose of this quasi experimental research design was to determine effects of a Community Participatory Health Promotion Program on Food Consumption and Exercise Behaviors Among Overweight Students. The sample consisted of two groups which were selected by purposive sampling. The first group were altogether 12 people who helped diagnose the problem. The second group were program participants, 48 overweight school-aged children (grades 5 and 6) from a primary school in Chiang Mai Province. The research was conducted between July and October 2015. The research instruments were the food consumption and exercise behaviors questionnaire and a group interview discussion guide. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test.

The results of study found that after attending the program food consumption behavior scores of the intervention groups overweight school-age children increased insignificantly at the level of .001 and exercise behaviors scores increased insignificantly at the level of .001 higher than control group.

The results showed that the community participative program for health promotion could improve food consumption and exercise behaviors in overweight school-aged children. However, there should be an extension of time for monitoring and program evaluation to clearly see the effectiveness of the community participative program for health promotion.
