Abstract

Ergonomic factors are one of significant occupational health hazard, resulting in musculoskeletal disorders particularly among informal garment workers. This descriptive study was to examine ergonomic factors and the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders, including their association among 330 informal garment workers in Chiang Mai Province, chosen through purposive sampling. Data was collected by using an interview form which had been confirmed its quality, content validity index (CVI) = 0.99 and acceptable reliability level (0.81). Obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square.

The major findings illustrated that the most significant ergonomic factors related to musculoskeletal disorders were bending or lifting neck (97.0%), twisting the body (90.0%), repetitive works (88.8), prolonged sitting or standing (88.2%), and bending forward (87.6%).  The prevalence rate of musculoskeletal disorders among the samples during the past 1-month period was 90.0 percent. Further, only bending forward associated with musculoskeletal disorders significantly (p < .01). The results of this study indicate that occupational health nurses and related health team should place a high importance on safety training so as to promote safe working postures.  This is anticipated to reduce the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders as well as improve work productivity among informal ferment workers.
