Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research using the pretest-posttest design were to compare psychological distress in caregivers of persons with schizophrenia before and after received the coping skills enhancement program, and psychological distress in caregivers of persons with schizophrenia who received the coping skills enhancement program and those who received regular nursing care. Forty caregivers of schizophrenic patients who had received health care services in outpatient department at Nakhon Ratchasima Rajanagarindra psychiatric hospital were randomly assigned to either an experimental or control group, 20 subjects in each group. The research instruments used in this research were: 1) the coping skills enhancement program, 2) the Kessler psychological distress scales, and 3) coping scale for caregivers of schizophrenic’s patients. Paired t-test and independent t-test were used to analyze data in the experimental and the control groups respectively.

The results showed that the psychological distress in caregivers of persons with schizophrenia after received the coping skills enhancement program was statistically significantly less than those before at p .05 level and the psychological distress in caregivers of persons with schizophrenia after received the coping skills enhancement program significantly higher than those in the control group who received the regular nursing care at p. 05 level.

These results could be used as basic information for nurses in planning nursing care in order to enhance coping skills for caregivers of schizophrenic patients to decrease the psychological distress.
