Social support and health behavior of the elderly of the elderly club of Sungmen District, Phrae Province

Abstract

Health promotion by the social support that affects the health behaviors of the elderlies. This research is descriptive correlational design. The purpose of this study was to study about the relationship between social support and health behaviors of the elderly of the elderly club. The sample of this study were the elderlies in the elderly club a total for 33 people. The research instrument are vertical semi-structured interview questions and a questionnaire. The Content Validity Index was 0.87 and 0.98 and the reliability was 0.85. The concept of social support by Cobb (1976) and Schaefer, Coyne & Lazarus (1981) was used as a model. Analysis of the relationship between the social support and health behaviors were Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient.

          These result show that the elderly receives social support from the family to participate in the elderly club and the health network, educational organization and public health personnel to provide knowledge about health care and local knowledge to be a healthy person. The elderly has better health behaviors with the goal to do good things for the social community for a long time. the overall social support the had a strong positive correlation to health behaviors of the elderlies in the elderly club (r = .847, p value < .05). These research findings can be used as basic information for community health nursing to develops guide line for promoting health behaviors of the elderly by social support.
