Abstract

Cerebrovascular disease leads to patients’ disabilities and creates a burden for the caregivers in the long term which leading them to have stress. Therefore, stroke caregivers must adapt themselves appropriately. The purpose of this quasi experimental research was to examine the effect of a social support program on the adaptation of stroke caregivers. Subjects were caregivers of stroke patients who had been admitted to Sawanpracharak Hospital from May 2019 to August 2019. These participants were purposively assigned into control and experimental groups with 25 participants in each group. The experimental group received the social support program run by researchers. Research instrument was the Social Support Program developed on the social support model of Schaefer, Coyne & Lazarus (1981). The data collection tool was the Caregiver Adaptation Questionnair by Chuenkul (1999). The content validity was validated by 5 experts and reliability was tested with Cronbach’s coefficient of .82. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, and Fisher’s exact probability test.

          Results revealed that:

  1. The adaptation levels of stroke caregivers in the experimental group after receiving the Social Support Program at 4 weeks and 8 weeks were statistically significantly different (p < .01)
  2. The adaptation levels of stroke caregivers in the experimental group after receiving the Social Support Program were statistically significantly different from those in the control group at 8 weeks (p < .01), but not statistically significantly different at 4 weeks.

The results of this study indicate that the Social Support Program could has positive effect on adaptation among stroke caregivers. Therefore, this program can be used in nursing practice to enhance more effectively on adaptation among stroke caregivers.
