Abstract

Health literacy is one factor that helps older people with tuberculosis (TB) manage themselves more effectively. This descriptive research explored health literacy and self-management, and the relationship between health literacy and self-management among older persons with tuberculosis. The participants in this study were older persons with tuberculosis who visited the TB clinic service in a hospital in Phatthalung Province. The sample of 84 cases was randomly assigned via random sampling without replacement during September to December 2021. The research instruments included a demographic and illness data recording form, and interview questionnaires for health literacy and self-management of older persons with tuberculosis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product-moment correlation.
The results showed that older persons with tuberculosis had a moderate level of health literacy and a high level of self-management. Health literacy was statistically correlated with self-management at a moderate level (r = .314, p < .001).
The results of this study can be used as information for health care professionals to promote health literacy which can result in effective self-management of older persons with tuberculosis.
