Abstract

The functional status of adolescent mothers, in terms of role functioning and responsibility in the postnatal period, has an impact with various factors. The purpose of this research was to study the power of predicting among state anxiety, postnatal depression, fatigue, social support, and functional status after childbirth among adolescent mothers. The participants were 100 adolescent mothers, aged 13 to 19 years, who received postpartum care services at four hospitals in the northern region: Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, First Regional Health Promoting Center Chiang Mai Health Promoting Hospital, Lamphun Hospital, and Lampang Hospital. The instruments used for data collection were the Demographic Data Record Form, the State Anxiety Inventory Form Y-1, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scales, the Modified Fatigue Symptoms Checklist, the Mother’s Social Support Questionnaire, and the Inventory of Functional Status After Childbirth-Revised for Adolescents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression.
The results of the study revealed that:
               1. The functional status among adolescent mothers was at a moderate level (66%), with a mean score of 88 (SD = .289)
                2. State anxiety, postnatal depression, fatigue, and social support could explain variation of functional status among adolescent mothers at 4% (R2 = .184, F = 5.344, p < .001); the factor that could significantly predict functional status among adolescent mothers was state anxiety (ß = -.623, p < .001)
The results of this research can be used as fundamental data for planning nursing interventions for reducing anxiety, thereby promoting effective functional status among adolescent mothers.
