Abstract

The purposes of this study were to examine self-management and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among persons with liver cirrhosis (LC), including the relationship between self-management and HRQoL. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 153 participants from the affiliated hospital of Chengdu University in Chengdu, Sichuan province, the People’s Republic of China. The research instruments included a demographic form, the Self-Management Behavior Scale (SMBS), and the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ). The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the SMBS and CLDQ questionnaires were 0.93 and 0.96, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Pearson product-moment coefficient test, and Spearman’s rank-order correlation test.

The results indicated that the mean score for self-management behavior and HRQOL were 69.58 (SD = 7.29), and 4.95 (SD = 0.78), respectively. There was a weak positive correlation between self-management and HRQOL (r = .23, p < .01). Regarding each dimension of self-management behavior, medication management had a moderate positive correlation with HRQoL (rs = .37, p < .01) and daily life management had a weak positive correlation with HRQoL (rs = .26, p < .01). However, the two dimensions of illness-monitoring management and dietary management were not significantly related with HRQoL.

The results of this study could be useful for clinical nurses by providing information to promote self-management among persons with LC in China. Good medication and daily life management may improve the HRQoL among persons with LC.
