Abstract

Acute myocardial infarction is a major health problem and a cause of death among older persons. The objective of this quasi-experimental research was to examine the effect of a discharge teaching program on readiness for hospital discharge among older patients with acute myocardial infarction. The participants consisted of older patients with acute myocardial infarction who were admitted to the inpatient unit at Nakornping hospital, Chiang Mai province. There were 44 subjects selected by purposive sampling and separated equally into two groups, an experimental and a control group. There were 22 participants in each group. The experimental group received the discharge teaching program, and the control group received the usual discharge teaching. The research instruments consisted of the discharge teaching program and the readiness for hospital discharge scale (adult form). The demographic data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The post-test mean scores of readiness for hospital discharge between the experimental and control groups were compared by independent t-test.

         The results showed that:

Readiness for hospital discharge for the experimental group, after receiving the discharge teaching program ( = 198.90, SD = 24.25), was significantly higher than for the control group ( = 172.64, SD = 21.26) at a significant level of 0.001.

The results of this research indicate that the discharge teaching program can improve readiness for hospital discharge among older patients with acute myocardial infarction. Therefore, the discharge teaching program should be used to prepare older patients with acute myocardial infarction for hospital discharge.
