Abstract

Resilience is a skill concept that affects emotional and mentality, and helps elderly people to recover during difficult situations. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to study the experience of elderly people’s resilience through coping with the coronavirus disease–2019. Data was collected by semi-structured in-depth interviews of 12 elderly people who were infected with coronavirus 2019 and had resilience scores of 70 or higher. Data analysis was done by content analysis.
The study found that elderly people’s experiences of resilience in coping with coronavirus disease-2019 consisted of two themes. The first theme was involved with emotional and mental management: 1.1) accepting the illness as normal, 1.2) not being afraid of the disease, and 1.3) having positive mind power. The second theme was about awareness and social support, and included: 2.1) behavioral change awareness and 2.2) valuable positive encouragement.
The research results provided database information for strengthening the resilience of elderly people during infection with coronavirus 2019.
