Nursing Care for Pediatric Patients with Tracheostomy Tubes Through Family-Centered Care: A Case Study Analysis
Keywords:
Family-centered care, Nursing, Pediatric patient, Tracheostomy tubeAbstract
Tracheostomy is a crucial procedure that facilitates survival in pediatric patients facing a critical condition, reduces the risk of oxygen deprivation, and enhances the efficiency of secretion clearance from the airway. The management of these pediatric patients is complex and necessitates close monitoring both in hospital settings and at home. Families play a vital role in providing continuous care in collaboration with healthcare teams to ensure appropriate home-based care and to prevent potential complications.
This article aims to provide knowledge regarding the indications for tracheostomy, the complications following the procedure, and the conceptual framework of family-centered care. Additionally, it includes a case study analysis of pediatric patients with tracheostomy tubes under the framework of family-centered care based on four core nursing principles: dignity and respect; information sharing; participation; and collaboration between families and healthcare teams. Families can be empowered with the skills and confidence necessary to provide effective care for pediatric patients at home. This approach ultimately contributes to improving the health and quality of life of both pediatric patients and their families while enhancing the efficiency and responsiveness of healthcare services to better meet the needs of patients and caregivers.
