Factors Correlation to the Gerontological Nursing Competencies in Nursing Students, Boramajonani College of Nursing, Songkhla

Background: Elderly nursing competencies are necessary to look after the physical, mental, social, and spiritual care of health personnel, especially professional nurses. Objective: The aim of this correlational study was to investigate factors correlated with gerontological nursing competencies among nursing students of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Songkhla province. Methods: Stratified proportional sampling was used to recruit eighty-four 3rd and 4th year nursing students. Questionnaires used to collect data consist of 1) personal data recording form 2) competency of gerontological nursing questionnaire, and 3) factors related to competency of gerontological nursing questionnaire. All questionnaires were tested for content validity as shown by IOC score was 1.00. The Cronbach Alpha Coefficients ranged between .74-.95. Descriptive statistics and Pearson product moment correlation were used to analyze data. Results: The results revealed the factor was highly correlated with gerontological nursing competencies was analytical thinking characteristic (r=.706), whereas nursing profession characteristic (r=.599) and analytical thinking skill presented (r=.576) were moderately correlated with gerontological nursing competencies at significance p<.01. Three factors including human caring (r=.438), acceptation in individual differences (r=.391) and cultural competency in nursing (r=.286) were low correlated with gerontological nursing competencies at significance p<.01. Conclusion: The results can be used as basic information for nursing educators to enhance the competency of gerontological nursing of nursing students by promoting human caring, acceptation in individual differences and cultural competency.
