Types of Articles Accepted

The journal of the Royal College accepts two types of articles (sections) as follows:

  1. Research Article
A research article is based on a research report, study findings, investigation, or thesis derived from the author’s primary data. It summarizes the research process concisely in the form of a manuscript, following the standard structure and components of a research article. The length of a research article should be 10–15 pages (A4 size).
  2. Academic Article
An academic article is based on a synthesis of knowledge or a literature review on one or more topics within the journal’s scope. The content is restructured to explain, analyze, interpret data, or provide recommendations and academic insights, innovations, or contributions beneficial to society. The length of an academic article should be 10–15 pages (A4 size).

Peer Review Process

All articles submitted to the journal must undergo a review process in which the content is critically evaluated for accuracy, relevance, and academic appropriateness by at least three experts in the relevant field (policy updated on 27-08-2021). The review is conducted in a peer-reviewed format and follows a double-blind evaluation process, ensuring that both the reviewers and authors remain anonymous throughout the review.

Article Review Process

The review process for submitted manuscripts is as follows:

  1. The author submits the manuscript file to the Chulabhorn Royal Academy’s online journal system.
  2. The editorial office acknowledges receipt of the manuscript to the author.
  3. The editorial office conducts a preliminary review of the manuscript, including the title, abstract, content, formatting, ethical considerations, plagiarism check, and overall suitability and relevance to the journal’s objectives, as well as theoretical and practical contributions.
  4. If the editorial office considers the manuscript suitable for review, it is sent to experts in the relevant field for a thorough peer review. This process is conducted under a double-blind review, meaning the identities of both the authors and reviewers are kept confidential.
  5. After receiving reviewers’ comments and recommendations, the editorial office proceeds with the appropriate actions based on the feedback.

  • In the case where revisions are required (Revision Required), the editorial office will send the reviewers’ comments and editorial suggestions to the author for manuscript revision. Once the author has revised the manuscript, it should be resubmitted to the editorial office for re-evaluation. The revised manuscript may be sent back to the reviewers for further assessment or reviewed directly by the editorial office. If a second round of revisions (Round 2) is necessary, the manuscript will again be returned to the author for further revision and re-evaluation. This process continues until the manuscript reaches a complete and satisfactory form for publication.

  • In the case where the manuscript is not accepted for publication (Decline Submission), the editorial office will send a notification letter to the author, providing the decision along with the reasons for the rejection.

  • In the case where the manuscript is accepted for publication (Accept Submission), the editorial office will notify the author and proceed with the manuscript through the stages of final revisions, proofreading, and formatting according to the journal’s article template before publication by the journal management team.

After the editorial office has sent the review comments from the reviewers to the author, the author is required to revise the manuscript and prepare a summary table of the revisions to be returned to the editorial office as follows:

Research Integrity Policy

Articles submitted for publication that involve research on human subjects must have received approval from an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or ethics committee recognized by the Office for Human Research Standards, National Research Council of Thailand, and must comply with international ethical standards and laws.

For research involving animals, studies must be approved by an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) or equivalent ethics committee, in accordance with the Animals for Scientific Purposes Act B.E. 2558 (2015) and relevant ethical guidelines.

Additionally, the journal expects authors to respect the privacy and confidentiality of research participants and to obtain informed consent for the publication of data prior to submitting their manuscripts. Authors must provide supporting documentation either attached with the manuscript at submission or upon request by the editorial office after the manuscript has been accepted. All documents must be submitted via the journal’s online submission system.

Conflict of Interest and Competing Interest Policy

The journal has a policy to prevent conflicts of interest among the editorial board, peer reviewers, and all authors, ensuring transparency and integrity in the publication process. If any party has a direct or indirect relationship to a submitted manuscript, the corresponding author must disclose such relationships to the editorial office in writing or via the journal’s online submission system.

Authors are expected to conduct and report research objectively, without any influence from personal, financial, or professional interests that could bias the study, its results, conclusions, or discussion—particularly direct or indirect benefits related to the research.

Peer reviewers must inform the responsible editor if they perceive any potential conflict of interest regarding a manuscript. This ensures transparency and integrity in the review process. Editors will then determine whether the reviewer should continue with the evaluation or if alternative arrangements are necessary.

Thai should be the primary language, while English may be used when no Thai equivalent exists or when necessary. Abbreviations must be written in full upon first use, and non-standard abbreviations should generally be avoided except for conciseness. Transliteration of English terms into Thai or translation should follow the guidelines of the Royal Institute of Thailand.

Manuscript Structure and Writing Guidelines

First Page (for both Research Articles and Academic Articles)

  • Title: The title should be concise and reflect the main objective of the article. It should not exceed 120 characters. For articles written in Thai, the title must be provided in both Thai and English.
  • Author Name(s): Author names should be listed immediately below the title in both Thai and English, without including academic titles or positions. If there is more than one author, names should be ordered according to intellectual contribution, from the greatest to the least. The affiliation of each author at the time of the research must be included. Only the corresponding author’s email should be provided. Affiliations and the corresponding author’s email should be indicated using superscript numbers at the bottom of the first page.
  • Abstract: The abstract should concisely summarize the article following the structure of the manuscript: Background and Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Use clear and precise language, complete sentences, and avoid unnecessary words. Abstracts should be written in both Thai and English, with the Thai abstract presented first. The Thai abstract should not exceed 300 words, and the English abstract should not exceed 250 words.
  • Keywords: Provide 3–5 keywords in each language at the end of the abstract. Keywords should accurately reflect the content of the research and be listed in alphabetical order.

Article Content (for Research Articles)

  • Introduction: The introduction should present the background and significance of the problem, relevant concepts and theories, research objectives, and the rationale for the study. A review of the literature related to the topic and aligned with the research objectives should be included, citing relevant academic sources. References should primarily be from scholarly articles, not general websites (non-eJournals). Copying text from other sources is prohibited, and references should generally not be older than 10 years unless they are essential theories, regulations, laws, or key content.
  • Methods: This section should clearly describe the research methodology or study design, research instruments (if applicable), study population and sample (if applicable), data collection procedures, data analysis methods, and statistical tools used. Content may be organized into subsections or separate paragraphs according to the topic.

For studies involving humans or experimental animals, authors must provide documentation confirming that the research project was approved by the relevant ethics committee for human or animal research, including the approval number. This documentation must be submitted with the manuscript for review. Authors should also ensure that the content does not violate research ethics or publication ethics (in accordance with the CI Policy).

  • Results: Report the findings of the study or experiment, presenting data derived from statistical analysis, tables, figures, or charts as appropriate.
  • Discussion: This section should analyze, synthesize, and interpret the results obtained, linking them with relevant academic literature. Explanations must be evidence-based, and unsupported statements should be avoided.
  • Conclusions: Summarize the main findings and show their alignment with the research objectives. Authors may express their academic opinions. The content should be well-organized, clear, and easy to understand. Include the practical or theoretical contributions of the research and provide recommendations for future studies.

Article Content (for Academic Articles)

  • Introduction: The introduction should present the background, context, significance, and scope of the topic being discussed. It should clearly state the objectives of the article and may include information on the potential benefits or applications of the content. References can be cited to emphasize key points of the topic. The introduction should comprise approximately 5–10% of the total article content.
  • Main Content: Authors may explain methods, principles, theories, data collection procedures, and provide reasoning for the points discussed. Tables, figures, and charts can be used to support explanations, along with appropriate references. The structure of the content can follow an order suitable to the author, with each section being complete and self-contained. Sections should be proportionate and not excessively long relative to the overall article.
  • Conclusions: The conclusion should summarize the main points discussed, highlight strengths or weaknesses, or provide additional insights not fully covered in the main content. It may reinforce key messages or suggest applications of the findings, but should avoid introducing unrelated information that does not appear in the article.

Citations

The Journal of Chulabhorn Royal Academy uses the AMA (American Medical Association) citation style. The guidelines are as follows:

  • References should not exceed 30 items.
  • Priority should be given to citing published peer-reviewed journal articles or chapters from peer-reviewed books. References should generally be within the last 10 years. For conference proceedings, references should not be older than 2 years after the event, and a permanent source, such as a DOI, should be provided if available.
  • For theses or dissertations, authors should verify whether the work has been published as a journal article or conference proceeding, and cite that source instead if available. Only cite the thesis directly if no published version can be found.
  • Personal websites, including Wikipedia, should not be cited. If citing an official institutional website, include the full URL and the date accessed.
  • In-text citations use a numbering system.
    • References in the text are numbered according to the order in which they appear, not alphabetically by author. The citation number should appear as a superscript at the end of the relevant sentence, e.g., “...as reported³.”
    • When citing multiple references at the same point, separate numbers with commas, and use a hyphen for ranges, e.g., “...as shown¹,⁵,⁶–⁹.”

  Page Numbers in References

  • Use Arabic numerals only, except for journal issues that use Roman numerals; in such cases, retain the Roman numerals as they appear (e.g., viii–x).
  • Use the full range of pages, except when page numbers include letters, which should be written in full (e.g., 124A–126A).
  • For articles identified by a digital document code instead of traditional page numbers, use the document code in place of page numbers (e.g., e100285 or PMID: 30065567).

  Journal Name Abbreviations in References

Requirements and Examples for Writing References

Journal Articles

  • For journal articles with up to six authors, list all authors’ names in full. For articles with more than six authors, list the first three authors followed by “et al.” in English or “และคณะ” in Thai.
  • If the article has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), include the DOI in the reference.
  • If no DOI is available, it is not necessary to include a DOI.
  • Journal names should be written in abbreviated form (Italic) for international journals. For Thai journals, use the full journal name in Thai; italics may be used, but abbreviation is not required.
  • If the author is an organization, use the organization’s name instead of an individual author.
  • For online articles that use an article number instead of page numbers, use the publisher’s designation such as “e” for electronic articles, or provide the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) or Publisher Item Identifier (PII) instead of page numbers.
