Factors Predicting the Caregiving Competence of Caregivers for Older Adults with Geriatric Syndromes in Ubon Ratchathani Province

This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to examine the level of caregiving competency among caregivers for elderly with geriatric syndromes and to identify the predictors of such competency. The sample consisted of 114 caregivers working in the long-term care system for elderly in Ubon Ratchathani Province, selected using a multi-stage sampling technique. The research instruments included a personal information questionnaire, a knowledge assessment on the care of elderly with geriatric syndromes, an attitude questionnaire, a policy perception questionnaire, an information access questionnaire, a social support questionnaire, and a caregiving competency assessment tool. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple linear regression.
The results revealed that the participants had an average age of 48.96 years (S.D. = 9.44) and an average caregiving experience of 4.55 years (S.D. = 3.00). The overall caregiving competency was found to be at a high level (Mean = 135.43, S.D. = 7.04). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that social support (ß = 0.61), attitude (ß = 0.32), and caregiving experience (ß= 0.18) were significant predictors of caregiving competency, collectively accounting for 60.2% of the variance (R² = 0.60, Adj R² = 0.59, F = 55.54, p-value < 0.01). These findings can be applied to inform policy development and guide the enhancement of caregivers’ capacity to improve the quality and effectiveness of care for elderly with geriatric syndromes.
