Factors Associated with Ethical, Professional Conduct, and Legal Competencies among Nursing Students at a Private University in Thailand

This descriptive research aimed to examine the relationships among cumulative grade point average (GPA), attitudes toward the nursing profession, and self-efficacy, and the ethical competency, professional code of conduct, and legal competency of nursing students at a private university. The sample consisted of 124 second - to fourth-year nursing students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing Science program in the academic year 2025, selected using stratified random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire comprising measures of ethical competency, professional code of conduct and legal competency, attitudes toward the nursing profession, and self-efficacy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
The results revealed that nursing students demonstrated a high level of ethical competency, professional code of conduct, and legal competency (Mean = 4.44, S.D. = 0.50). Among these, ethical competency had the highest mean score (Mean = 4.44, S.D. = 0.50), followed by legal competency (Mean = 4.32, S.D. = 0.49) and professional code of conduct (Mean = 4.18, S.D. = 0.48). Furthermore, attitudes toward the nursing profession and self-efficacy were positively correlated with ethical competency, professional code of conduct, and legal competency at a statistically significant level of 0.01 (r = 0.56 and 0.44, respectively). Therefore, nursing education administrators should develop or implement active learning approaches that promote positive professional attitudes and enhance students’ self-efficacy in order to continuously strengthen students’ ethical, professional, and legal competencies.
