Abstract

The purposes of this correlational research were to examine the relationships of anxiety, perceived severity, body image perception and social support. One hundred and twenty-three patients with the diagnosis of coronary artery disease waiting for coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) were recruited from three tertiary hospitals in Bangkok. Questionnaires were composed of demographic information, patients’ needs, anxiety, perceived of severity, perceived of body image and social support. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data.

The overall patients’ needs score during the pre-operative phase of CABG was at a medium level. There was no significant between gender and overall patients’ needs during the pre-operative phase of CABG. Anxiety, perceived of severity, perceived of body image were positively related to patients’ needs during the pre-operative phase of CABG at the significance level of .05 (r = .366, r = .447 and r = .464 respectively). There was no relationship between social support and patients’ needs during the pre-operative phase of CABG.

This finding suggests that the nursing care for pre-operative preparation for CABG patients is not only information, but also physiological, emotional and spiritual needs. In addition, nursing team should consider and well prepare for effective operative care especially patients who are high level of anxiety, perceived high severity diseases, and high body image concern.
