Abstract

This study aimed to determine the predictive power of cardiac operative risk, health literacy, learning needs, communication, and trust in healthcare personnel on quality of life among patients three months after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. The sample was randomly selected one hundred and sixteen patients who attended the outpatient heart surgical clinic three months after the coronary artery bypass graft surgery at a hospital specializing in the heart and lungs. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire package including the details of patients’ demographic characteristics, the cardiac operative risk, health literacy, learning needs, communication with health care providers, trust in healthcare personnel, and quality of life. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis by enter method.

Results indicated that the sample had good quality of life (mean+SD= 86.97±7.9). The multiple regression model with all five predictors produced R2= .195, F(5,110) = 5.33, p< .001. Only communication with healthcare providers was statistically significant predictor (β = 0.39, p < 0.001), indicating that those patients with better communication with health care providers were expected to have better quality of life during three months after coronary artery bypass graft.

This study suggested that healthcare providers should recognize the significance of patients’ communicative ability to convey helpful health information for promoting the patients’ quality of life during three months after coronary artery bypass graft.
