Abstract

This study was quasi-experimental research, using a two-group, pre-test/post-test design. Objective was to examine the effectiveness of social support combined with guided imagery program on preoperative anxiety among heart surgery patients. The samples were open heart surgery patients who received treatment in heart disease patients ward, Naresuan University. The samples were selected by purposive sampling, 25 persons each group divided in control group and experimental group.  The control group received usual care and the experimental group received social support combined with guided imagery program and usual care before surgery. The research instruments consisted of personal data, preoperative anxiety questionnaire, and social support combined with guided imagery program. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, paired t-test, and independent t-test.

The results showed that the experimental group had the mean score of preoperative anxiety lower than before received the program and lower than the control group (p<.05). The mean score of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate before and after the study of experimental group were not significantly different (p>.05). Furthermore, there was no significant statistical difference between the two groups in terms of the mean blood pressure and heart rate (p>.05).

This study suggests that social support combined with guided imagery program should be applied for heart surgery patients in order to decrease preoperative anxiety.
