Preconception counselling in adults with congenital heart disease: a nursing role

The number of adult patients with congenital heart disease has increased significantly during the last decades due to medical advancements and improvement in surgical techniques. In the western countries, it is estimated that 90% of pediatric patients have survived to adulthood. Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of mortality in pregnancy. Therefore, in order to reduce the maternal mortality in pregnant patients with congenital heart disease, pre-conception counselling is very important in this group of patients. This article presents the role of nurses in preconception care and counselling in adult congenital heart disease, including the knowledge of congenital heart disease types, major problems in the pregnancy of patients with cardiovascular disease. Pre-pregnancy counseling consists of a pre-pregnancy risk assessment and recommendations for contraception. To reduce maternal and infant mortality and unwanted pregnancy leading to termination of pregnancy through therapeutic abortion.
