The purpose of this study aimed to investigate the relationships among fear of COVID-19 face mask-wearing behavior, depressive symptoms, and quality of life among older persons with musculoskeletal conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 175 participants who received services at the orthopedic outpatient department at Ramathibodi Hospital were purposively recruited to participate in the study. The measures include 1) the Demographic and Health Information Record Form, 2) the Fear of COVID-19 Scale Thai version, 3) the Face Mask Use Scale Thai version, 4) the Patient Health Questionnaire Thai version, and 5) the EQ-5D-5L Questionnaire Thai version. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and Spearman's correlation coefficient.
The results demonstrated that older adults with musculoskeletal conditions reported a low level of fear of COVID-19, good face mask-wearing behavior, mild depression, and perceived good quality of life. For the relationship of interest, a low negative correlation was found between fear of COVID-19 and face mask-wearing behavior, fear of COVID-19 and quality of life, and depressive symptoms and quality of life. Noted that a low positive correlation was shown between face mask-wearing behavior and quality of life.
The essence of these findings could serve as a basis for the development of nursing practices focusing on specific care covering physical and psychosocial care, and quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gerontological nurse practitioners should pay attention and continually screen for physical and psychological health changes in older adults with musculoskeletal conditions during any other uncertain situations.
